The Wooden Hull Yacht Club is dedicated to bringing together people who are interested in cruising and racing wooden yachts. Our goal is to stimulate interest and continuing love and respect for the skill, design and workmanship which only a wooden hull boat can reflect.

As classic sloops, schooners, ketches and yawls disappear we aim to encourage the restoration and preservation of sailing maritime heritage. Our members take pride in the ownership and appearance of their sail and power boats and wish to share with and educate others in the beauty of classic wooden vessels.

Here's a quick rundown of our race and event calendar.  Please check the events page (button to the left) for further details.

  • The Yesteryear Regatta - May 7th in San Diego.  This is the first event in the California Classic Yacht Series and is organized by our friends in the Ancient Mariners Sailing Society (AMSS) and hosted by the San Diego Yacht Club.
  • The Balboa Yacht Club Wooden Boat Festival in Newport Beach, June 4th.  This event returns for the third year at the Balboa Yacht Club.  Organized by WHYC club member Ralph Rodheim, this event promises to be even more successful than last year's.

The festival will be open Saturday, June 4th.  John Wayne's iconic yacht, the Wild Goose, will be on display along with between 40 to 50 in-the-water and on-shore classic wooden boats,  We will have great food and drink, vendors of all things nautical, and live music.  The event is open free to the public and a free shuttle service is provided so that parking will not be a challenge.

For more information on this event, refer to their website:

Yesteryear Recap

The 2015 Yesteryear Regatta was held on May 9th in San Diego Harbor.  Friday morning however, broke drizzly and gray.  A foul harbinger as the day ended w/ 4 WHYC boats that were scheduled to arrive having to cancel their journey.  That left Antares and Skipper Tim w/ Fairwind as the WHYC's representatives at the YYR.  Fortunately, as many of you know, Skipper Tim brings the party.

Saturday morning brought us clearing skies and a building wind.  The race, held in San Diego Harbor, is always challenging with currents, tides, dead spots, wind shifts and secret spots all over the course.  This year's race favored reaching boats.  In fact, the Turtle Award winner, Sea Witch, was also the Overall Winner. Go figure.  During his acceptance speech, the 2015 YYR winner had this to say:

"Some people really love sailing.  Other people like sailing.  Those that like sailing buy fast boats !!!"

I've included the YYR recap, which contains the finishing order, as an attachment to this email.  Here's a link to some great YYR regatta photo's.

On an unrelated note, Chris Frost is rumoured to be purchasing Sea Witch.

One More Time Coming Up

On Saturday, June 20th, the 40th running of the One More Time Regatta will be held in Marina Del Rey. The regatta is hosted by the Del Rey Yacht Club with
assistance from the Pacific Mariner's Yacht club.  The One More Time is also the second of three events in the California Classic Yacht Series.

Last year's race was held under near-ideal conditions and we expect more of the same this year.  Dock and slip space will be available for visiting yachts.  Please contact the Del Rey Yacht Club at (310) 823-4664 and the Pacific Mariner's Yacht Club at (310) 823-9717 to make a slip/dock space reservation.
